SUMMARY:"The Woodcutter" - a Members' Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:(Click on thumbnail for full details) \nWood\, a material emblematic of our local landscape and our local economy. Throughout the history of mankind\, trees have provided fuel and shelter and also some of the first materials used to record events and express ideas. \nThis exhibition celebrates the creative possibilities of wood\, materially and/or figuratively. Whether you choose to sculpt in wood or draw on paper with charcoal; represent the forests or acknowledge the story of timber and its many derivatives in some other way\, the scope for this exhibition is wide. \nWhat does wood mean to you? The beauty of a tree or forest; the food it can provide; shelter and tools from it’s timber; paper; it’s significance in the ever changing environment. The list of potential subjects is long. \nConsider “Gus”\, generally thought of as the Art Society’s mascot\, and described so well in the words of Pieter Zaadstra. \n“Our most enduring image is “The Woodcutter”. I maintain this assertion because in many ways the woodcutter represents us. \n“The Woodcutter” is a wooden dwarf effigy of industriousness. Within a dreary dour exterior\, bowed to the sorrows of the world\, and constant labour at the heart of wood. Every polished grain oozes the sweat of ages down to distant days of yore\, dark days given new breath by the clever whittling skills of the sculptor\, the late Mr Gustav Christensen of Mt Gambier.” \nSo much to draw your inspiration from. \nThere will be 3 categories that should cover any medium you choose: \n2D – painting\, works on paper\, photography\, etc \n3D – sculpture\, recycled materials\, standing objects for plinth or floor \nMixed Media (Hanging) – Works that hang that have structural elements extending out from the backdrop \nFind the entry form here and the Terms and Conditions here. Print your labels from here https://www.seas.org.au/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/Woodcutter-2025-Labels.pdf \nThe exhibition will be held in the Riddoch Arts and Cultural Centre from the 12th of April to the 8th of June in conjunction with a smaller exhibition that the gallery will be displaying on the same theme. \nEntries close on the 14th of March. This is to enable the gallery to pre plan the display and to coordinate with artists where necessary if there are any special hanging or display requirements. There is no set size limitation other that that works must be able to be moved comfortably and safely by two people. There will be a limit of 5 entries per member.
